⚠️ Note: This animal is located at an external location outside Belgium.
the Heterometrus longimanus (Asian Forest Scorpion). This species is very popular because they grow impressively large, yet are less venomous than many other species.
housing
- Terrarium: For a single adult specimen, an enclosure of 40x30x30 cm is ideal. They are ground dwellers, so ground surface area is more important than height.
- Substrate: Use a thick layer (10-15 cm) of moist substrate such as coconut fiber or unfertilized potting soil. They like to dig deep burrows.
- Setup: Provide sufficient hiding places such as pieces of cork bark, flat stones, or half a coconut.
climate
- Temperature: During the day between 25°C and 30°C. A heating mat on the side of the terrarium works best.
- Humidity: High, between 70% and 85%. Spray the enclosure regularly with water. The substrate should feel moist, but not waterlogged.
- Water: A shallow water bowl with fresh water is necessary.
food
- Diet: Crickets, grasshoppers, dubia cockroaches, and occasionally a mealworm.
- Frequency: Young animals (scorplings) 2 times a week; Adult animals only need to eat once a week or every two weeks.
behavior & handling
- Character: Generally calm, but they can react defensively with their claws (pedipalps). They use their claws more often than their stinger.
- Handling: Although their venom is similar to a bee sting, it is better to not handle them to avoid stress.
Did you know that this scorpion glows beautifully blue-green under a UV lamp (blacklight)
