de Liphistius sumatranus (Sumatran Trapdoor Spider). This is a unique, “primitive” spider known for its distinctive appearance (with a segmented abdomen) and its ingenious trapdoor traps.
housing
  • Type: It is a burrowing spider building a trapdoor.
  • Terrarium: An enclosure with plenty of depth is essential. A tank of 20x20x25 cm is sufficient.
  • Substrate: Use a thick layer (at least 15 cm) of sturdy substrate such as a mix of loamy soil and coconut fiber. The soil must be firm enough to dig a tunnel in without it collapsing.
  • Decoration: Place some moss and small twigs near the entrance of the burrow; the spider uses this material to camouflage her trapdoor and the signal threads (tripwires).
climate
  • Temperature: Average between 22°C and 26°C. They do not like extreme heat.
  • Humidity: Relatively high (70% – 80%). Keep the bottom layers of the substrate moist, but ensure the top layer is not soaking wet to prevent trapdoor mold.
food
  • Diet: Crickets, dubias or small grasshoppers.
  • Behavior: The spider waits behind its trapdoor until prey touches the signal threads, then shoots out at lightning speed.
behavior & handling
  • Character: Very shy. They spend almost all their time in their tunnel. In case of danger, they pull the trapdoor shut tightly.
  • Handling: Do not handle. These spiders are fragile and their bite can be painful (although not life-threatening to humans). Furthermore, removing the spider from the burrow causes extreme stress.
