The Platythomisus octomaculatus is an arboreal crab spider from Southeast Asia. They are known for their bright yellow to deep orange color with the characteristic eight black spots on their abdomen.
1. housing
  • Enclosure type: Because they are arboreal, a tall enclosure is more important than a wide one. A glass terrarium or a tall plastic container (e.g. 15x15x25 cm) is ideal.
  • Setup: Use many vertical branches and broad leaves (true or silk). They do not make webs to catch prey, but often hide among leaves to strike.
  • Ventilation: Good ventilation is crucial to prevent mold formation, especially given the required high humidity.
2. Climate (Temperature & Humidity)
  • Temperature: During the day between 24°C and 28°C. At night, this may drop slightly to room temperature (approx. 20°C).
  • Humidity: This species likes a humid climate, around 70-80%. Lightly mist the enclosure every other day. Ensure the spider can drink from the droplets on the leaves.
3. food
  • Diet: They are active hunters that primarily eat flying insects.
  • Food insects: Burdock flies, fruit flies (for young animals), and small moths are preferred. They sometimes accept small crickets or dubia cockroaches, provided they move in front of their noses.
  • Frequency: Feed young spiders every 2-3 days; adult animals can manage with 1-2 times a week.
4. behavior & handling
  • Character: Generally calm, but they can be very fast when startled.
  • Handling: As with most spiders, handling is discouraged. They are fragile and a fall can be fatal. Furthermore, they have a venomous bite (not dangerous to humans, but painful).
5. Soil
  • Use a moisture-retaining substrate such as cocopeat, unfertilized potting soil, or a mix with sphagnum moss to maintain humidity levels.
