Here is a brief care sheet for theBirupes simoroxigorum (also known as the Borneo Neon Blue Earth Tiger). This is one of the most sought-after tarantulas in the world due to its bright cobalt blue legs, but it requires specific care.
housing
- Type: It is a burrowing species (fossorial).
- Terrarium: An enclosure with plenty of depth is more important than width. Use a terrarium of at least 20x20x30 cm.
- Substrate: A very thick layer (at least 15-20 cm) of moist substrate is crucial. Use a mix of coconut fiber, peat moss, and sphagnum moss so that their tunnels remain sturdy.
climate
- Temperature: Keep the temperature between 24°C and 26°C. They do not like extreme heat; their natural habitat in the rainforests of Borneo is constant and moderately warm.
- Humidity: Very high (80% – 90%). The substrate must remain constantly moist, but ensure good ventilation to prevent stagnant, stuffy air and mold.
food
- Diet: Crickets, locusts and dubias.
- Frequency: Young animals (slings) eat 2 times per week; adult animals approximately once per week. Because they live in tunnels, they often leave only the remains (“food boli”) outside their burrow.
behavior & handling
- Character: Very shy and defensive. When disturbed, they will flee to their burrow at lightning speed. They are extremely fast.
