⚠️ Note: This animal is located at an external location outside Belgium.
The Cyclocosmia ricketti, also known as the “Oreo spider”, this trapdoor spider originates from Vietnam.
They are known for their truncated abdomen, which functions as a living shield (phragmosis) to close off their passageway when in danger.
Housing & Substrate
This is the most important factor for this species, because they spend almost their entire lives underground.
- Enclosure: A vertically oriented terrarium or a deep plastic container (minimum 20×30cm bottom surface area).
- Substrate: Use a mixture that retains moisture well and is firm enough for tunnels, such as a 4:1 ratio of forest soil (humus) and digging sand. We also always add some clay.
- Depth: Minimum 15 to 20 cm substrate, so that the spider can dig a vertical tunnel 7 to 15 cm deep.
- Depth: Minimum 15 to 20 cm substrate, so that the spider can dig a vertical tunnel 7 to 15 cm deep.
climate
- Temperature: Ideal is between 21°C and 27°C. Avoid temperatures below 13°C.
- Humidity: Keep this high, between 70% and 80%. Lightly mist the substrate regularly, but ensure it does not become soaking wet to prevent mold.
Behavior & Care
- Diet: Live insects such as crickets, cockroaches, or mealworms.
- Frequency: Adults eat about once a week or every two weeks.
- Behavior: They are ambush hunters. They wait at the entrance until they feel vibrations from prey.
- Water: A shallow water dish is recommended, although they obtain a lot of moisture from their prey and the substrate.
Handling & Safety
-
- Do not handle: These spiders are fragile and can be injured by a fall.
- Vif: They are generally not aggressive. Their venom is not fatal to humans and is often compared to a wasp sting.
