theThereuopoda sp. Indonesia (often called the Asian house centipede). These are fascinating, prehistoric-looking hunters known for their bizarre speed and extremely long legs.
housing
  • Terrarium: Choose an enclosure of at least 30x30x40 cm. Because this species likes to climb, height is more important than with other centipedes. Provide a very fine-mesh lid; they are masters at escaping.
  • Substrate: A layer of 5-10 cm of moist substrate (coconut fiber, peat, or forest soil).
  • Setup: Very important! Place many vertical objects such as cork bark, branches, and plants. They often rest vertically against the wall or on a branch.
climate
  • Temperature: Between 24°C and 28°C. They come from tropical forests and do not like cold or drafts.
  • Humidity: High, around 75% – 85%. Lightly mist the enclosure daily. They are very sensitive to drying out; a humid environment is their life insurance.
  • Ventilation: Crucial. Despite the high humidity, there must be good airflow to prevent “stagnant air”.
food
  • Diet: Active hunters. They eat crickets, flies, small grasshoppers, and cockroaches.
  • Behavior: Unlike the Scolopendra, they often catch their prey from the air or during a fast sprint. They are sight hunters with large eyes.
behavior & handling
  • Character: Incredibly fast and skittish. They dart away at the slightest vibration.
  • Special feature: They can “shed” their legs to escape an enemy. These grow back after a molt.
Did you know: This is one of the few centipedes that actually “watches” what is happening outside the terrarium. A great animal to watch for the lover of bizarre arthropods!
