The Ophistreptus guineensis, also known as the Chocolate Millipede, is a popular species among millipede enthusiasts
  • Origin: West Africa (primarily Nigeria and Ghana), where they live in relatively dry grasslands and savannas.
  • Formaat: Een volwassen exemplaar kan een lengte van 15 tot 20 cm bereiken.
  • Levensduur: Bij de juiste verzorging kunnen ze 5 tot 7  jaar oud worden.

  • Terrarium: Use a tank at least 60 cm wide. Because this species likes to dig and climb, a combination of bottom surface area and height (for branches) is ideal.
  • Substrate: The bottom is the most important part. Ensure a layer of at least 10-15 cm thick. A good mix consists of: leaf hummus, rotting deciduous leaves (beech or oak) and white rot wood (essential food).
  • Temperature: Keep the terrarium between 24°C and 28°C. At temperatures above 25°C, they become noticeably more active.
  • Humidity: Aim for 60-80%. Although they are more tolerant of drought than many other tropical species, the substrate should always feel slightly moist (not soaking wet).
behavior & handling
This species is often visible during the day and likes to climb on branches. When handling, be aware that millipedes can secrete an irritating fluid when stressed; therefore, always wash your hands after contact.
